The use of cooled and frozen shipped semen in
equine breeding has become a relatively common procedure amongst
American Quarter Horse breeders. Thoroughbreds, however do not allow
these procedures for various reasons.
Breeding farms and reproductive centers have the
personnel and equipment to effectively tease, ultrasound and time a mare
for breeding. Accordingly, we require that mare management take place at
such centers.
To apply for a cooled semen breeding to our
stallion, please return a signed
Cooled Semen
Breeding Contract and copies of both sides of the mare’s registration
papers reflecting current ownership. These items should be accompanied
by payment of the applicable booking fee.
Prior to the shipment of cooled semen, the mare
owner must have paid the following: (1) the booking fee; (2) the balance
of the breeding fee; (3) a service and shipping fee for each shipment of
cooled semen; (4) if shipment is to be made by any method other than
Federal Express priority overnight, additional shipping fees for the
cost of such alternative shipping such as courier charges, same day air
freight charges , etc.; and (5) a refundable Equitainer security
deposit. Payment of all or part of such fees may be made by Visa or
Mastercard.
In order to schedule a shipment of cooled semen,
contact River Island Ranch with your request as early as possible on the
day prior to the day on which the semen is to be shipped. A current year
breeding schedule will be included with the breeding contract agreement
and mare information packet. Our stallion is collected on a strict every
other day schedule throughout the entire breeding season, including
Sundays and holidays. No exceptions will be made. In the event that you
wish to cancel your request for a shipment, please notify us by 7 a.m.,
otherwise the service fee will be charged. In the rare event that an
insufficient amount of semen is available on a collection day to satisfy
all needs, preference will be given to mares on the farm over those
requesting shipped semen.
Our normal method of shipment of cooled semen will
be via Federal Express or UPS priority overnight generally arrives by
10:00 a.m. the following day). Certain types of Federal Express service,
such as priority overnight and Saturday delivery, are not available in
some areas of the country. You should contact Federal Express to learn
of any limitations in your area. Shipment from River Island Ranch on
Saturday or Sunday must be made by air freight as weekend Federal
Express service is not available to
us. If shipment by same day air or any other air
freight service is requested, additional fees will be incurred for
airport courier and airline shipping charges.
The Equitainer should be returned to River Island
Ranch by Federal Express second day air service. The Equitainer must be
returned to River Island Ranch within 5 days after it is received by
you, or rental fees of $15 per day will be charged for each additional
day which it remains not returned. After you notify River Island Ranch
that your mare has been checked 30 days in foal, we will refund your
Equitainer security deposit, providing that your account is in good
standing and you are not breeding any other
mares by cooled semen.
